Currarong beach house renovation project - our beach house in Currarong NSW

The Starting Point

When we bought the house I saved all the real estate photos. They’re the clearest record of what we’re starting with before Felipe gets going with the Currarong beach house renovation.

It’s a mid century build and very little has been done to it over the years. The kitchen is mostly original, the bathroom too, and you can feel the era in all the best ways in some of its glory. The stairs and the deck were extremely unstable when we inspected the place. Felipe actually repaired the stairs before we even received the keys on settlement day, which gives you an idea of how wobbly things were.

It’s not a Nino Sydney Beachcomber, but it has that spirit in the shape and the light. Simple lines and an easy feeling that made us want to keep it true to its age rather than modernise it into something it was never meant to be.

Before Photos

A few things stood out straight away:

  • The light is lovely
  • The mostly original kitchen needs a rethink, though we do like the colour
  • Same for the original bathroom – maybe not the colour
  • The garden is a vast blank canvas – a bit daunting
  • The stairs and deck were unsafe, so that was the first thing sorted

For Phase I there are no major architectural moves. It’s mostly repairs, remediation and practical updates so the house works better for the way we live right now, while staying true to its mid century character. We want to get to know the house before anything major changes.

Next Steps

Next I’ll share what we tackled first after settlement and how we’re planning the renovation in stages as well as the principles we are going to try to stick to.
